How it works
Text to Speech turns your words into spoken audio with two very different engines. The ultra-real engine is powered by Deepgram’s Aura neural voices: add your API key, pick a voice, and get studio-quality narration with natural pacing and tone — downloadable as MP3 or WAV. The instant engine uses the voices built into your browser: no key, no waiting, unlimited use, but the quality varies by device and it can’t be downloaded.
Use it for video voiceovers, audiobook drafts, ad reads, accessibility narration, or giving your presentations a voice. Because the ultra-real engine runs on Deepgram’s servers, generation takes a few seconds — a progress popup keeps you posted. Your API key never leaves your browser: it’s stored in local storage and sent only to api.deepgram.com.
Frequently asked questions
Is text to speech free?
Yes. The ultra-real engine uses Deepgram’s Aura voices — new Deepgram accounts come with free credits to try the API, and you use your own API key (check deepgram.com/pricing for current amounts). The instant browser engine is unlimited and free forever — no key needed.
Which voices sound the most human?
The ultra-real (Deepgram Aura) voices — they use modern neural synthesis with natural rhythm, emphasis and pacing, and most listeners can’t tell them from a real recording. The instant browser voices are convenient but noticeably more robotic.
Where do my text and API key go?
Your API key is stored only in this browser’s local storage and is sent only to api.deepgram.com. This site has no server, so we never see your key. Your text is sent to Deepgram to generate the audio; with the instant browser engine, nothing leaves your device at all.
Can I download the audio?
Yes — audio made with the ultra-real engine can be previewed and downloaded as MP3 or WAV. The instant browser engine is play-only: browsers don’t expose its audio for capture, so there is nothing to download.
Can I use the generated audio commercially?
That depends on Deepgram’s terms for your plan — check their terms of service before using generated voiceovers in paid work.
