How it works
Key Changer transposes your audio to a new musical key without the chipmunk effect. Drag the transpose slider up to +12 or down to -12 semitones (a full octave each way) and fine-tune in cents for precise retunes like 440 Hz to 432 Hz.
Under the hood it is a two-stage DSP chain: a phase-vocoder pitch shift moves every frequency, then an inverse formant shift moves the spectral envelope back to where it was — so the melody lands in the new key while the vocal tract and instrument body stay put. That is why a song shifted up three semitones still sounds like the same singer, not a cartoon version of them. All processing is client-side: your audio never leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between key change and pitch shift?
A plain pitch shift moves everything — the notes AND the resonances of the voice or instrument — which is why big shifts sound chipmunk-like. Key change here does a pitch shift and then moves the spectral envelope (the formants) back to its original position, so the notes land in the new key while the singer still sounds like the same singer.
Will vocals still sound natural?
Within a few semitones, remarkably so — the formant compensation is exactly what keeps a transposed vocal from turning into a cartoon. Push to the ±12-semitone extremes and you will still hear artifacts (a slightly phasey or grainy texture), which is normal for every pitch algorithm.
What does the 432 Hz preset do?
It retunes the standard A440 concert pitch down to A432 — a ratio of 432/440, which is 12 * log2(432/440) ≈ -0.318 semitones, rounded to -32 cents here. The shift is subtle but audible on sustained tones, and it is popular with ambient and meditation producers.
Does transposing change the tempo?
No. Duration and tempo are preserved exactly — only the pitch moves. If you also want it faster or slower, use the Tempo Changer.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. Like every tool here, the key changer runs entirely in your browser. Files are decoded, transposed and re-encoded on your own device.
